Before Shah Rukh Khan became Rahul in Darr, Yash Chopra had locked in Sudesh Berry with costumes ready. Here is why the director made the big switch.
Bollywood casting stories never cease to amaze, but this one might just take the crown. Long before Shah Rukh Khan defined the iconic psycho-lover trope with his stuttering “K-k-k-Kiran,” legendary director Yash Chopra had almost finalized another actor for the villainous role of Rahul Mehra in the 1993 psychological thriller Darr. That actor was Sudesh Berry.
Yes, you read that right. Sudesh Berry, who was an up-and-coming face in the early ’90s, was practically locked in for the film. In a candid chat on the Accompany Akki podcast, the actor revealed that the preparation had gone so far that his costumes for the movie were already stitched and ready to go. So, what went wrong at the very last minute?
It turns out it all came down to star power and cinematic perception. The film’s primary hero, the righteous navy officer, went through a revolving door of superstar casting, moving from Rishi Kapoor to Aamir Khan before finally landing on Sunny Deol. Yash Chopra realized that having a relatively fresh face like Sudesh Berry overpower a giant action star like Sunny Deol on screen just wouldn’t sit right with the audience.
Sudesh shared that towards the climax, there is a scene where Rahul punches the male lead. The director felt that having a lesser-known actor beat up a massive star would break the spell for moviegoers. Chopra, driven by his classic filmmaking instincts, ultimately decided to cast Shah Rukh Khan, who was already making serious waves with his dark, intense roles. Hilariously, Sudesh admitted he hasn’t even watched Darr to this day, though he holds zero bitterness toward Yash Chopra’s passion as a creator.
Looking back at that era, Sudesh feels that while everyone in the industry worked relentlessly, destiny played a huge hand in shaping careers. Speaking about contemporaries like Shah Rukh, Aamir, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Akshay Kumar, he called them “blessed children of God” who got the right push at the right time. He even added a heartwarming, witty spin on SRK’s legendary success, pointing out that King Khan has his wife Gauri by his side, and with the blessings of Gauri-putra Ganesh, a fall is simply out of the question.
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Sunny Deol, Darr is a psychological thriller about an obsessive lover whose dangerous fixation on a woman turns her life upside down.
