Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut, Dil Chahta Hai, completely changed Indian cinema when it first hit screens. It showed a fresh, modern way of looking at friendship, relationships, and growing up.

The story centered around three close college friends (played by Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna) trying to figure out life after college. To celebrate the movie’s 25th anniversary, the cast and crew recently came together for a special reunion hosted by Yuvaa, where they shared some fun, behind-the-scenes stories about how the iconic film was made.

During the chat, Aamir Khan shared that he didn’t truly feel like his character, Akash, until he got a brand-new haircut. Back then, almost every Hindi film hero had the same puffy, middle-parted hairstyle inspired by Amitabh Bachchan. Director Farhan Akhtar wanted to break away from that and give Aamir a totally new look. Aamir admitted he started panicking at the salon while his hair was being chopped off. But as soon as the haircut was finished, he felt an instant connection to his role, long before the cameras even started rolling.

Another surprising moment came when Saif Ali Khan confessed that he almost backed out of playing Sameer. Saif felt he was playing the character easily, but Dimple Kapadia jumped in to remind him that he almost missed the role due to last-minute hesitation. She revealed that she actually called him personally to convince him not to leave such a great script. Aamir backed her up, saying the whole team had to step in to talk Saif into doing the movie.

Saif admitted he got cold feet because he had been offered two other films where he was the main solo lead, rather than sharing screen space in a group of three. Luckily, a quick chat with Aamir changed his mind. Aamir told him that Dil Chahta Hai was being made on a much bigger scale and that his character would look far better on screen than in those other projects. That advice worked, leading Saif to say yes and creating one of the most loved trios in Bollywood history.

Besides Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna, Dil Chahta Hai also featured Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni, and Dimple Kapadia. The film marked Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut.
