Ahmed Khan talks about the iconic Rangeela dance piece he had to re-shoot three times due to A.R. Rahman and RGV’s intense demands.
When people think of the hit 1995 movie Rangeela, they immediately remember the high-energy songs that changed Bollywood dancing forever. Tracks like ‘Yai Re’ were massive hits and even won a young Ahmed Khan a major Filmfare Award. But the famous choreographer recently shared a surprising secret in an interview with Rediff.
While everyone assumes the big, energetic songs were the hardest to make, Ahmed Khan confessed that ‘Yai Re’ was actually the easiest song of his career. Instead, his biggest challenge came from a quiet, artistic dance piece that almost drove him crazy behind the scenes.
The real struggle for him was a musical piece called ‘The Spirit of Rangeela’. It was a huge challenge because the music genius A.R. Rahman had given it a little of string sections. Ahmed Khan initially wanted to do what most Bollywood choreographers do—bring in a group of twenty background dancers to make the scene look big and grand. But the director, Ram Gopal Varma, had a completely different, minimalist plan. He wanted the leading lady, Urmila Matondkar, to dance completely alone in the frame, while Jackie Shroff’s character watched her quietly from far away.
Taking away the background dancers put immense pressure on Ahmed. Without a big group to fill the screen, every single movement and look from Urmila had to carry the entire weight of the scene. Ahmed found it incredibly difficult to capture the exact mood the director wanted. In fact, he struggled so much that he had to choreograph and shoot the entire dance piece three times before getting it right.
Instead of giving up, this intense struggle actually changed his life. Ahmed Khan said that shooting ‘The Spirit of Rangeela’ thrice gave him the ultimate confidence. It proved to him that if you just keep trying and never give up, you can achieve the impossible.
Starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar and Jackie Shroff in leading roles, Rangeela tells the story of Mili, a middle-class girl who dreams of becoming a Bollywood star, and finds herself caught in a love triangle between her childhood friend Munna and film actor Raj Kamal.
