Director Siddharth P Malhotra opens up about Kamal Aur Meena, promising an honest, flawed look at Kamal Amrohi in the upcoming Meena Kumari biopic.
Director Siddharth P Malhotra is gearing up to bring one of Bollywood’s most famous and tragic love stories to the big screen with Kamal Aur Meena. The upcoming film focuses on the deep and complicated relationship between legendary director Kamal Amrohi and superstar actress Meena Kumari.
In a recent chat with Filmfare, while speaking about the project, Siddharth revealed that the idea took root during the making of his film Maharaj, when Bilal Amrohi, Kamal Amrohi’s grandson, reached out with an incredible collection of personal memories. This included Kamal Amrohi’s handwritten diaries, Meena Kumari’s private journal, and roughly 2,000 to 3,000 intimate love letters written in Urdu, which the team carefully translated into Hindi.
Writers Bhavani Iyer and Kausar Munir were then brought on board to craft the screenplay after extensive research into this complex love story.
For the unversed, Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari’s real-life journey began like a classic romance. The acclaimed director famous for Mahal, met Meena on the sets of Tamasha when she was just 18 years old. What followed was a whirlwind connection that eventually led to marriage. However, their relationship quickly became known as one of the most painful and troubled marriages in Indian cinema history.
Even though they shared a lot of love and artistic talent, their marriage was filled with strong ego clashes, extreme possessiveness, and severe restrictions on Meena Kumari. Over time, these struggles left her feeling deeply lonely and heartbroken, which eventually led to severe health issues and a tragic ending.
Addressing whether the movie might present a one-sided view since it draws heavily from Kamal Amrohi’s perspective, Siddharth urged audiences not to judge the film before watching it. He clearly stated that they have not tried to clean up history or make Kamal Amrohi look like a perfect person.
“Don’t judge the film before watching it. We haven’t whitewashed anyone. We’ve stayed true to the story as it happened. We haven’t portrayed Kamal Amrohi as a flawless or saint-like figure. Both Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari are deeply flawed human beings. In my films, characters are never simply black or white, they always exist in shades of grey,” he was quoted as saying.
With the script now finished, Siddharth further revealed the team is actively searching for the right actors to play these roles.
